DRIVE ORKNEY has compiled this list of questions which are commonly asked regarding the hire of its vehicles and driving in Orkney.
Q: What is the minimum age for a driver of a hire vehicle?A: 21 years
Q: Are there any medical requirements
necessary for the driver of a hire vehicle?
A: The driver must be medically fit and able to drive / be in full control
of a vehicle as defined by UK law and the DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing
Authority). At present, none of the vehicles within the DRIVEORKNEY fleet
have been adapted for drivers with a physical disability.
A: 1 Day (24 hours).
Q: Will DRIVE ORKNEY need to
see official driving licence documents?
A: Yes also British drivers who have the new British photo ID drivers licence
must produce both parts of the new British photo ID drivers licence
Q: Is 'Collision Damage Waiver' Insurance available with
the hire of the car?
A: Yes. Details available on our Terms and Conditions page or upon request.
Q: Is the contents of the vehicle
covered by the vehicle hire insurance?
A: No. The contents of a vehicle are carried entirely at the owner's risk.
Extra personal insurance should be used if carrying expensive items within
vehicles.
Q: Who is liable for the hire
vehicle fuel?
A: The hirer is liable to pay for all fuel used. The vehicle starts each
hire contract with a full tank of fuel. The vehicle should be returned with
a full tank of fuel or DRIVE ORKNEY will fill the tank on the hirer's behalf
and charge for the fuel used (at pump prices) plus an administration fee.
Q: What are the mileage limits
/ rates on the hire vehicles?
A: There are no mileage limits applicable to the vehicles if they remain
with the Orkney Islands. If a vehicle is taken to the Scottish mainland
or Shetland then a mileage limit and rate may apply. Enquire with DRIVE
ORKNEY to find out latest mileage limits and rates for the type of vehicle
you are intending to hire.
Q: What is the quality of the
vehicles that are available for hire?
A: All of the vehicles available for hire are under 3 years in age. All
vehicles have low mileage and are well maintained in our fully equipped
Garage Orkney Motors offering you peace of mind when it comes to reliability.
Q: Will DRIVE ORKNEY charge for
cleaning the vehicle upon return from hire?
A: Generally no charge is made for cleaning the vehicle upon return from
hire. However, a cleaning charge will be made if the vehicle is deemed to
have an excessively dirty interior or exterior.
Q: Is smoking permitted in DRIVE
ORKNEY vehicles?
A: No smoking is permitted in any DRIVE ORKNEY vehicles.
Q: Can the hire vehicles be taken
off Orkney Mainland?
A: Yes. DRIVE ORKNEY vehicles can be taken off Orkney Islands. The unlimited
mileage offer still applies if the vehicle is taken to any of the other
islands within the Orkney Islands (e.g.. Hoy, Shapinsay etc.). If the vehicle
is taken to the Scottish mainland or Shetland then prior arrangement must
be made as mileage limits and rates may apply.
Q: Can vehicles be hired to visitors
from other countries?
A: Yes. DRIVE ORKNEY will hire vehicles to non-UK citizens. Please contact
DRIVE ORKNEY to confirm that a driving licence from your country of origin
will be acceptable for UK insurance purposes.
Q: What is it like to drive in
Orkney?
A: Driving laws applicable to Orkney are the same as for the UK mainland.
Roads are of UK mainland standard and consist of a combination of two way
single carriage way roads (Class A and Class B Roads) and single track roads
with passing places. Volumes of traffic are far lower than in the southern
part of the UK mainland.
Q:Do you meet the late Ferry sailing from Shetland/Aberdeen?

Unfortunately we do not meet the Northlink 23.00 arrival from the Northlink Terminal at Hatston Kirkwall
Q:Can I add additional drivers
A:Yes, one additional driver can be added free of charge.
